What is a "Flipped Classroom?"
A flipped classroom integrates technology and student learning by activating prior student knowledge and driving student-focused learning. It gives students a solid foundation in new material before they encounter it in the classroom. Essentially, students are assigned a video covering new material to watch and take notes/comprehension quizzes on at home in lieu of traditional homework. Students, then, are able to walk into class with a knowledge baseline as the class interacts with the new subject matter. This allows more student-centered, hands-on, and inquiry-based learning time, as opposed to traditional teacher-focused, lecture based lessons.
In our classroom, I will typically assign a video every couple of weeks along with required notes and/or an Edmodo quiz. Videos will be assigned several days in advanced to maximum students' opportunity to watch. Most videos are through youtube.com. If students do not have technology access at home, they are welcome to watch assigned videos during office hours (Tuesdays and Thursdays 2:15-3:15). Find assigned flipped videos here.
